Christian Schooling

Authentic Christian Education = Unveiling God

The purpose of schooling in a nut shell is to provide a nurturing and safe environment in which students are enabled to reach their potential; preparing them for life in this world. A Christian Worldview teaches that God is the creator of all things and as such, almost everything we teach in schools is a by product of God having created. The Christian teachers’ role, therefore, is to unveil the attributes of God that are inherent within the things that He has made. To this end, the curriculum taught in a Christian school is the same as any other school except for the broadened perspective to include the God behind it all.

Most often the complaint from students about the Christian element in schooling is ‘non-relevance’. Whether affiliated with the Christian faith or not, all students object most to God and the Bible being brought up in class when there is no apparent relevance to the subject matter. Their objection is warranted. All things raised in a classroom pertaining to Christianity should have a direct connection to what is being discussed in class. So, just how do we ensure that this is the case; that relevance between subject matter and God are evident.

Gaebelein quotes Cervantes, "'Where the truth is, in so far as it is truth, there God is.'" (Gaebelein, 1968, p. 22). This means that if we teach anything that is true, then God is in it somewhere as He is in essence truth. Romans 1:19&20 puts it this way, “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (ESV, emphasis by author)

This does not necessarily mean that every single fact taught must have an attribute of God associated with it. Each teacher appropriately makes the connections in a way that is age sensitive.

Students at Snowy Mountains Christian School are welcomed as individuals, each with their own special gifts. Each child is valued for who they are. Each is an intentional creation, individually gifted for a specific purpose, by our God, (Psalm 139). In our nurturing learning environment, children are encouraged and empowered to develop skills for life, for future study and for the work force. We want them to be able to contribute to their world; to make a difference.

At Snowy Mountains Christian School our focus is on educating the ‘whole child’ from a Christian worldview and so we focus on excellence in learning and excellence in character in an environment that fosters spiritual, emotional, and physical wellbeing.
